<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: large;">The Wedding Gown</span></div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">As wedding planners, we have had the privilege to accompany many brides to select her wedding gown. Every bride has a different vision about how her gown should look. Some brides want simple elegance, others want grand opulence, still others are over the moon for couture gowns. So, what makes a wedding gown special? Is it the designer, the fabric, the style? Or, does a wedding gown symbolize so much more? For us, we believe a wedding gown is the beginning thread in a rich tapestry created by the the union of two people, and the celebration of their lives together. </span></div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Recently, a friend sent us an email about a wedding gown with such a rich heritage, that we felt compelled to pass along the story. We hope this warms your heart as much as it did ours!</span></div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: left;"></div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
<br />
Lilly Friedman doesn't remember the last name of the woman who designed and sewed the wedding gown she wore when she walked down the aisle over 60 years ago. But the grandmother of seven does recall that when she first told her fiancé, Ludwig, that she had always dreamed of being married in a white gown he realized he had his work cut out for him. <br />
For the tall, lanky 21-year-old who had survived hunger, disease and torture this was a different kind of challenge. How was he ever going to find such a dress in the Bergen Belsen Displaced Person's camp where they felt grateful for the clothes on their backs?<br />
Fate would intervene in the guise of a former German pilot who walked into the food distribution center where Ludwig worked, eager to make a trade for his worthless parachute. In exchange for two pounds of coffee beans and a couple of packs of cigarettes Lilly would have her wedding gown. <br />
For two weeks Miriam the seamstress worked under the curious eyes of her fellow DPs, carefully fashioning the six parachute panels into a simple, long sleeved gown with a rolled collar and a fitted waist that tied in the back with a bow. When the dress was completed she sewed the leftover material into a matching shirt for the groom.<br />
A white wedding gown may have seemed like a frivolous request in the surreal environment of the camps, but for Lilly the dress symbolized the innocent, normal life she and her family had once led before the world descended into madness. Lilly and her siblings were raised in a Torah observant home in the small town of Zarica, Czechoslovakia where her father was a melamed, respected and well liked by the young yeshiva students he taught in nearby Irsheva. He and his two sons were marked for extermination immediately upon arriving at Auschwitz. For Lilly and her sisters it was only their first stop on their long journey of persecution, which included Plashof, Neustadt, Gross Rosen and finally Bergen Belsen . <br />
Four hundred people marched 15 miles in the snow to the town of Celle on January 27, 1946 to attend Lilly and Ludwig's wedding. The town synagogue, damaged and desecrated, had been lovingly renovated by the DPs with the meager materials available to them. When a Sefer Torah arrived from England they converted an old kitchen cabinet into a makeshift Aron Kodesh.<br />
"My sisters and I lost everything - our parents, our two brothers, our homes. The most important thing was to build a new home." Six months later, Lilly's sister Ilona wore the dress when she married Max Traeger. After that came Cousin Rosie. How many brides wore Lilly's dress? "I stopped counting after 17." With the camps experiencing the highest marriage rate in the world, Lilly's gown was in great demand.<br />
In 1948 when President Harry Truman finally permitted the 100,000 Jews who had been languishing in DP camps since the end of the war to emigrate, the gown accompanied Lilly across the ocean to America . Unable to part with her dress, it lay at the bottom of her bedroom closet for the next 50 years, "not even good enough for a garage sale. I was happy when it found such a good home." Home was the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington , D.C. When Lily's niece, a volunteer, told museum officials about her aunt's dress, they immediately recognized its historical significance and displayed the gown in a specially designed showcase, guaranteed to preserve it for 500 years.<br />
But Lilly Friedman's dress had one more journey to make. Bergen Belsen , the museum, opened its doors on October 28, 2007. The German government invited Lilly and her sisters to be their guests for the grand opening. They initially declined, but finally traveled to Hanover the following year with their children, their grandchildren and extended families to view the extraordinary exhibit created for the wedding dress made from a parachute. <br />
Lilly's family, who were all familiar with the stories about the wedding in Celle , were eager to visit the synagogue. "It was an emotional trip. We cried a lot."<br />
Two weeks later, the woman who had once stood trembling before the selective eyes of the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele returned home and witnessed the marriage of her granddaughter. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #7f6000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: small;"> </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Whew. The presents are all unwrapped, the decorations are neatly packed away for next year and the last drop of eggnog is history. The champagne is a mere memory and all the party hats are in the recycling bin. We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your family and friends. We enjoyed ours, but alas, no rest for the weary. We hit the ground running today at the Bridal Extravaganza in downtown San Antonio, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. It was our first bridal expo and it was a great success. We met so many wonderful people who were planning for their upcoming weddings. Additionally, we met new vendors and made some great contacts. Here are a few pictures we took while we were there.</span><br />

</div><div style="background-color: #fff2cc; color: #7f6000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">We love Christmas. The trees decorated and lined with presents, icicle lights lining all the neighborhood roofs, the smell of wood burning in the fireplace, hot steaming mugs of cocoa and parties filled with our friends and loved ones. Chubby little faces filled with wonder and excitement at the thought of Santa and his reindeer. But, often during this time of year we are so busy we almost forget to stop, have fun and enjoy it all. So this year we came up with our own Wedding Planning, "Twelve Days of Christmas"............sort of a wish list to make our busy holiday season a little cheerier and a lot merrier! </div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">At The Robin's Nest we love being in love. It's the main factor that drives our business and our passion for the clients we serve. The sight of a groom's face when he catches the first glimpse of his bride walking down the aisle is priceless. The glowing smile of a bride looking up at her groom as they are annouced husband and wife never gets old. No matter how many times we see it, we have the same reaction.............pure joy.<br />
</div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">But what happens when it's not the first marriage for either the groom or bride..........or both? Shouldn't they be able to have the same feelings of awe when they say their "I Do's"? The answer should be of course, but unfortunately some second timers have the feeling they don't deserve a big wedding. It can become very complicated when families and children from previous marriages enter the picture. Trying to include everyone and make each person feel special can be challenging but don't give up. More and more blended families are merging their lives successfully and the wedding should be the perfect start to a lifetime of happiness. <br />
</div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Over the years, we have seen several wonderful ways that new families use the wedding ceremony to include everyone, from reciting vows to each others children, or giving rings as symbols of love and a promise to care for them as their own. No matter how you decide to celebrate a second chance at love, we hope you do it with all the joy and awe of a first love. <br />
</div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #bf9000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">We would love to hear from you and how your second chance at love was made special.<br />

</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #7f6000;"><br />
</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #7f6000;">San Antonio is famous for a lot things but few people know that San Antonio is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the entire country. Now whether you believe in that kind of thing or not, it's very interesting to hear all of the stories behind the rumors and legends. Downtown San Antonio was the site of many famous battles and perhaps that contributes to the numerous stories of hauntings. <br />
</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #7f6000;"><br />
</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #7f6000;">Several hotels downtown have a rich history of hauntings and ghostly sightings. The Emily Morgan is one of the most well known hotels that is rumored to be haunted. It is a historic hotel that provides beautiful views of the Riverwalk, and the downtown area. It was once The Medical Arts Building, built in 1924. Many a claim have been made about ghostly sightings. Thankfully, most people report never seeing anything out of the ordinary. Now, I'm a big chicken and I would never want to see anything even close to that but some brides seem to be thrilled with the possibility of having a ghostly visitor on their honeymoon. The staff are wonderful and the hotel is a fabulous place to stay for any occasion. <br />
</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #7f6000;"><br />
</div><div style="background-color: white;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #7f6000;">I'm interested in what everyone else thinks. Would that be your idea of a great experience or something that you wouldn't want any part of. I guess we can add haunted hotels to our favorites list!!</span><br />

</div><div style="color: #7f6000;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000;">Today's blog, surprisingly, doesn't have anything to do with weddings, events, wine or even chocolate. All of those things are what we love but they mean nothing without the special people in our lives. Taking care of yourself and making sure you are healthy for your loved ones is the best gift you can give them. So, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are dedicating this issue to awareness of the disease that tears apart millions of homes each year. We haven't escaped the pain either. Our family was devastated over a decade ago when our Mother was diagnosed. The prognosis was not as good then as we had hoped. She endured painful surgeries and months of debilitating chemotherapy. Thankfully, our story had a happy ending. Our Mother made a full recovery and is currently cancer free. <br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000;">Her recovery was possible because of all the hard work and energy put into finding successful treatment options and ultimately cures for the millions of women stricken with the disease. Please join us this month in our support of Breast Cancer Awareness month by learning how to perform self exams and encourage the women in your life to also learn. Women age 35 should have a baseline mammogram and yearly exams after age 40. Those guidelines are only suggestions. If you have a high risk, like we do, then you should consider starting mammograms earlier. Please see your doctors as soon as you can. Your life may depend on it. <br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000;">If you are young and healthy, it may not seem like you need to worry about it. We all do. We can all help. One of the coolest ways we have found to help the fight is through a program called Donate The Dress. Instead of hanging your dress in your closet or trashing your dress for a photo shoot, consider helping the cause by donating. You can find more info at <a href="http://www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/">http://www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/ </a><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000;">Now go do that exam!!<br />

</div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">In our last blog we talked about what inspired us to plan an entire wine themed wedding - wine truffles! But why limit ourselves to just using wine as an ingredient? We think the perfect wine wedding should include having the ceremony itself in one of the beautiful vineyards that fill the Hill Country. </span><span style="font-size: small;">What could be more romantic than a hilltop view overlooking a vineyard, with miles of blue Texas sky above you, as you exchange vows with your soul mate? Or better yet, a canopy of stars to light an evening of dancing and celebration! The quiet, peaceful surroundings of a vineyard create a perfect beginning for any new couple.</span><br />
<br />

</div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Recently we met Kristin Stevens, the new Event Coordinator at the Driftwood Estate Winery in Wimberly, Texas. She shares our love of wines and weddings. The winery is currently building a new pavilion just for special events and we would love to be the first to host a ceremony on their beautiful estate. </span><br />
</div><span style="font-size: small;"><br style="color: #7f6000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /></span><br />
<div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">With so many wineries and vineyards in South Texas, the possibilities are endless. Graceful white tents arching above rows of manicured vines would be the perfect setting for a South Texas style wedding. But deciding which vineyard is the hard part. We have our favorites but we would love to know what everyone else thinks. Have you discovered the perfect setting on some of your travels? Let us know what your favorites are and we will post the top picks. </span><br />

If you said no, you probably don't live here. Texas is the fastest growing producer of new vineyards and wine in the country. With over one hundred vineyards and wineries to choose from, everyone is sure to find just what they are looking for. </span><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Our absolute favorite was found at the Austin Wine Festival in May of this year. We got rained out and spent most of our day huddled under a tent hosted by one of our favorite people and now favorite vineyards, Fall Creek at <a href="http://www.fcv.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1254158900_4">www.fcv.com</span></a>. Susan Auler represented their wines that day and made us lifelong lovers of her wines and company. Cheers to Susan and their wines! </span><br />

</span><br />
</div><div style="color: #7f6000; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">And as we plan our perfect wine-themed wedding we have to have our next favorite, chocolate! The two go so perfectly together it was only a matter of time before someone here is South Texas put their spin on it and turned the two into a beautiful combination. But the one who stole the show and made the whole trip to Austin worthwhile was Nicole Patel and Delysia Chocolates. Based out of Austin, Nicole has managed to make heaven available on earth wrapped in a <span id="lw_1254158900_5" style="-moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous; -moz-background-origin: padding; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; border-bottom: 1px dashed rgb(0, 102, 204); cursor: pointer;">Texas Wine</span> truffle. We've had truffles before but WOW. These are unbelievably good and bursting with wonderful wine in each bite. OK, we ate them in one bite. They inspired us to do a wine themed wedding based off of one truffle so you know they were amazing. You provide the wine and you can have your own custom made truffles. What bride wouldn't like that? Check it out at <a href="http://delysia.com/" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1254158900_6">delysia.com</span></a>. </span><br />

For us, it's more than a single definition, a feeling or a look. It's a way of life. Here in South Texas we take things a little slower. We strive to be a little more friendly. We spend lots of time with our families, our friends and our communities. We enjoy the simple things in life and see inspiration in even the most mundane tasks.
